Chef Michael Smith was on hand to show the Grade 6 students at Souris Consolidated School how to make naan bread, the staple food for many people in Afghanistan and for the characters of the novel The Breadwinner. The students had previously read the novel written by Deborah Ellis and depicting life in wartorn Afghanistan through the eyes of an 11-year old child. The students made their own naan bread, and later sat down with their families to eat bread and an Afghani stew made out of rice, lamb, carrots, pistachios and other ingredients. Seen here are the students eating a freshly baked piece of bread just taken out of the oven by Chef Michael.
