GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The National Weather Service confirmed on Wednesday that two tornadoes swept through Clemson and Townville on Tuesday afternoon.

Meteorologists said the first tornado touched down in Hart County, Ga., near the Reed Creek area around 2 p.m. Tuesday. There it uprooted trees and damaged buildings, including a petting zoo that was set to open in September.

Forecasters said the funnel then traveled northeast across the state line and into Clemson, where it knocked down trees and power lines.

Meteorologists said this tornado was rated an EF-1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, with winds between 86 and 109 mph.

The second tornado developed just east on Townville in Anderson County around 3 p.m. Tuesday. There it destroyed a garage and twisted trees, meteorologists said.

The weather service said the twister then moved from Anderson County into Pickens County and dissipated just south of Clemson.

Meteorologists said this tornado was rated an EF-2 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, with winds between 110 and 137 mph.
