The rise in stocks for a second day appeared to reassure some investors that Tuesday's huge advance was based on reasonable optimism and amounted to more than a one-day pop.
While new economic reports Wednesday, were seen as justification for the Federal Reserve's bolder-than-expected cut in interest rates to try to ward off a recession.
The Fed, in its statement, said that "some inflation risks remain," but by making the bolder half-point cut in its federal funds rate, it was signaling that it clearly believed the threat of a recession outweighed concerns about inflation.
Oil prices reached record highs for the seventh straight session Wednesday, reaching $82.51 a barrel.
Analysts attribute that increase to higher gasoline production and a lower demand, due in part to the end of the peak summer driving season.

The Dow up 76.17 or point 55%
The Nasdaq is up as well, 14.82 or point 56%
And the Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 9 and a quarter, or point 61 percent
