The D'ni alphabet for descriptive books is apparently a lot more complex than the 20-odd letters that make up normal language. That's what the *rest* of that big book is about, after the single page that is visible.
Note how much Atrus stresses the important distinction that the writer does not create the Age. He wants to make completely sure Yeesha does not turn out like Gehn, Sirrus or Achenar.
