One of many John Prine favorites of mine. A bit funny but oh so sad. Based on a true story.

Kimberly Lynn's Bass gives just the right amount of soul.

  • Not bad. It's not the most creative use of a bass I've ever seen, though...

Wish the good people in the "crowd" would shut the heck up and pay this song the respect it deserves.

  • Thanks, for the comments. At a Pub date, with no cover charge, you can expect to get a lot of customers oblivious to the music. I ignore them and play for those who listen.

As to the bass, when Kimberly plays with me she just works to make me sound better. If you want to get a better handle on her solo playing check out her videos. (bassplayerkimberly) She is the most talented and accomplished player I have ever worked with.

  • Your performance of this song is really great. I love the arrangement. I was looking for John Prine videos (I'm a big fan) when I came across yours. I think the understated way you and your bass player plays it is perfect. I going to listen to it again!! Thanks.

  • Thanks for the kind words. I have been a Prine fan since his first album. I do quite a few of his songs and will be posting more after we tape a gig I have on Jan 25th. Kimberly is the best musician I have ever played with. Check out her vids.

  • My tuning, low to high is D G D G B D (open G).

I am playing this sing as a simple 1-4-5 (G-C-D) in the Key of G.

If I am playing in either C, D or G, I do not use the Capo. If I use a Capo, I place it on the fret for either the 1, the 4 or the 5 (which ever offers the lowest available tones)of the key in which I am playing.

  • Tremendous job on this Prine classic. I especially liked your original but respectful approach to the original. As for the bass, I know nothing about playing this instrument but Kimberly's sound made me say wow in the first couple of bars. Groove, rhythm, texture -- it is all there, I liked it a lot. Thank you for posting!

I am sorry to see that you have not posted for a long time.

    Kind regards,

  • Hey, I liked this a lot despite the poor sound quality. As for the bass, I know nothing about playing that instrument but I believe it was used to terrific effect here. It gave a tangy taste to the sound (hehe), it struck the rhythm and was understated enough to let the song and the lap steel play the major role.

I think yours is a very original and still respectful approach to the original.

  • Wow- sounds nothing like the original but it sounds fantastic!!!

  • I have listened to this dozens of times. I always enjoy it. I can't imagine it played more beautifully. Please post more.

  • Good stuff, enjoyed the different take on a great but quirky Prine classic.
