In Part One we took a nursery juniper and pruned it down to three usable trunks. In Part Two we wire the trunks and do some rough pruning to create the bonsai tree. For more: http://www.kuromatsubonsai.com For more on juniper bonsai, http://kuromatsubonsai.com/evergreen-bonsai/juniper-bonsai

  • Question: why didn't you expose and locate the rootball before pruning thre lower branches off? Without finding the surface roots and establishing where that new soil level is you can end up cutting of branches that look too low but when you re-pot your branches you left are too high up on the trunk.. I have seen many trees that end up looking like lollipops because of this.... just curious because you obviously know how to work plant material.

  • @PumpkinMan66 This was 2009. I had done a lot of 1 hour (or longer) club demos, but this was the first time I tried to cram one into Youtube's 10 minute video format.

  • You should shoot without backlighting. The camera is constantly adjusting lighting levels. We're having a hard time seeing what you see, as the tree is constantly showing lighter and darker based on the back lighting.

  • @Poldark99 This was one of our first videos. We are using a different camera and different shooting techniques now.

  • Can you make a video on how to make a redwood tree into a bonsai because I bought some seeds and I want to convert it to bonsai once it gets big enough. THANKS!

  • I have two redwood trees in my collection. They are pretty sensitive to hot weather, so I only work on them in the spring. Watch next spring for a redwood video.

  • @chasnsx Thank you for the reply. I saw in video 3 you just left the rootball alone... I'm sure that you no longer do that or it was a time constraint for the video. but I did notice though that the first branch was pretty high up the trunk...and that was my point. hopefully somebody reads this and takes it into account when they pot up any nursery stock...Otherwise really good work man. Peace

  • Amazing, I just received a Spiney Greek Juniper, Do you have a video on showing how to prune this one, It is perfectly straight upright

  • @professorLing Yeah you take the wire off after a couple, weeks/months/years, depending on how old and how long it takes to establish the new arrangement

  • viewer from Dublin, Ireland - your videos are of excellent quality, keep up the great work. The Bonsai community in Ireland is very small compared to the UK, Europe and the US, hence for those intrigued with Bonsai it can be difficult to learn all the necessary skills unless you're prepared to travel to events.. these videos give great confidence to beginners and intermediate level to learn new techniques.. now just need to get my hands on some quality material..

  • can you take the wire off? if yes, how long after?

  • Hey Charles

Just wondering if you might give us a lesson on winterizing. How do you do it? Thanks, Thad
