In November 1987, CBS Scrapped its 11-month-old morning show "The Morning Program." The only survivor, Weatherman Mark McEwen would go on to survive even this poor CBS Morning performer. To keep affiliates happy, and with WRAL's ratings power, CBS worked it out to showcase North Carolina for a day. Obviously, WRAL was a prime beneficiary of the lavish attention. This clip features Katheleen Sulivan, who would be canned around two years later for uttering the infamous quote "You know what CBS Stands for? Cheap Broadcasting System." into a live microphone. OOOPS. She was replaced by Paula Zahn. The video is great early footage of a young Greg Fishel -- and one of my broadcasting heroes, the late John Hudson. Enjoy!

  • I was born in Railigh in 1988!

  • You are a lucky human being!

  • Brings back very fond memories of John Hudson. Feel very old when seeing Greg Fishel here. If I remember correctly, WRAL used video from the CBS This Morning visit (i.e. Harry/Kathleen walk in gardens and "Carolina in the Morning" reference) to heavily promote their Morning News and the National Telecast in tandem.

Any chance that you'll have any more clips of WRAL (i.e. "24 Hour News Source" and early "North Carolina's News Leader" years?) And WTVD, WPTF? Thanks for putting this clip up!

  • I have roughly 45 hours of WRAL News dating back to the late 80s through the late 90s. I am planning to upload much more in the coming weeks and months. I just purchased the Dazzle video creator. It all comes down to how much time I have on my hands to do this stuff.

    Thanks for your comments!

  • Harry Smith is back on CBS, doing The Early Show.

  • was this a good news channel

  • look how young al roker looks

  • John Hudson was in Tulsa for a lot of years before his gig in Raleigh. Great clip.

  • Charles Kurault was my favorite on "Sunday Morning"... He had the kind of voice and demeanor that would sooth a bad hangover from the night before and the wonderful stories told.

  • Man, I can smell the cheese from all the way over here in the UK!
