Arranged & performed by Alfred Wong 黃學揚 (piano), Ricky Yeung (dizi), Charles Kwong (clarinet) & Jimmie Jim (cello) Mahler was inspired by Hans Bethge's The Chinese Flute, an anthology of Chinese poetry, and turned it into a symphony for 2 vocal soloists & large orchestra entitled The Song of the Earth. The 3rd movement, "Von der Jugend" ("Of Youth") is a word painting of the classic & stereotypical scene of ancient China, with a porcelain pavilion, reflective pools and people drinking tea. The music in this movement is definitely an effort to sound formally Chinese as well, such as pentatonic figures in the high woodwinds at the beginning.

#3 is a Gaultier-Bethges-Mahler translation of a poem by Li Bai
This translation (Gaultier) is rather free, a beautiful sferic picture. But bad as translation:
Li Bai tells about "a family Tao", not about Porzellan, indeed the Chinese charactar means both.
See Teng-Leong Chew.
