This is Cecilia Vennersten's and Sissel Kyrkjebø's versions of the song "Innerst I Själen/Sjelen". The original version is the one recorded by Sissel, and you might wonder why I didn't put her version first? Well, that's simply because the Swedish version had the longest intro so that I could write all that stuff at the beginning. And perhaps I'm saving the best for last...? ;)

Anyway, I think both versions are great. The lyrics are rather similar (as you will see in the translations below) but they sound a little different: the Swedish version is quite relaxed while the Norwegian version is very fresh.

NOTE: You are free to say what you think about the two versions, but all provocative comments about Sweden, Norway or the languages will be removed. This vid wasn't intended as a competition between Sweden and Norway or the singers.

Now, here are the English translations. They are made by me and I hope they are correct. If you'd find any mistakes, feel free to tell me and I'll change it. I'd also like to thank defboy10 for helping me with the Norwegian version.

The Swedish version:

Deepest within my soul
The memory still lives
Of an unforgettable clime
That once was my home

The paths that lead
Across meadows and lands
Through forests with a scent of soil
Of resin and of bark
Wild winds are playing
Around with needles and leafs
The sound of a storm that has reached
An adjacent sea

Deepest within my soul
A river murmurs
Filled with strong feelings
For a land that was myself

The swells lead me
Back to my beach
Hour after hour
The waves are rolling towards land
The splinter of a memory
The shadow of a song
Blend themselves with earth and sky
In each sunset

Deepest within my soul
A song trembles
From a desolate region
That once was myself

Deepest within my soul
The memory still lives etc...

Deepest within my soul
A song trembles etc...

Deepest within my soul
A river murmurs etc...

Deepest within my soul
The memory still lives etc...

The Norwegian version:

Deep within my soul
The land is rising up
A bright and golden streak of land
That once was my home

The forests of calmness
The paths that go
Through heather and arable land
To the sea outside
The sound of wind and dreams
The scent of soil and sea
The backs that straighten
When the storm deflects

Deep within my soul
It whispers each night
About a hidden and other land
That once was myself

The ocean stays back
The swells beat
Hour after hour
Against the land outside
The remainders of a memory
And the shadows of a song
Blend themselves with earth and sky
In each sunset

Deep within my soul
A sound trembles
From another landscape
That once was me

Deep within my soul
The land is rising up etc...

Deep within my soul
It whispers each night etc...

Deep within my soul
The land is rising up etc...

Deep within my soul
It whispers each night etc...

Deep within my soul
The land is rising up etc...

Enjoy!

  • Hello Sara,

This was also a beautiful version of the original by Sissel. A bit different. A pity that I couldn't see her singing. Thanks for sharing, because this is one of my favorites of course by Sissel(see my favorites) . But now I know what she sings.

  • Hi Ernst!

Thanks for your nice comment, and I'm glad that you found the translation useful!

  • I`m a huge fan of Sissel Kyrkjebø! I love this song.

  • I am not norwegian or swedish, but I live in Norway and I\ve been in Sweden once.

I love both countries and languages! Very nice of you not to accept provocative comments. Norway and Sweden are adorable, beautiful countries.

I love Sissel and it is the first time I hear Cecilia. I still prefer Sissel, maybe 'cause she has the original version, maybe 'cause I'm used to it, maybe 'cause I understand her words and she makes me cry!

But Cecilia is also amazing singer! Takk Tack! :)

  • Sissel... the best! no doubt! :-)

  • @exentr

Man sier "Noreg" i mange tettsteder i Norge, hvor Nynorsk er offisielt skriftspråk :)

  • Sara,

Lovely background! Very nice to hear both versions and have translations. Very interesting to hear the different sound of the Svenska and Norske versions. I think Cecilia sounds very good next to Sissel.

  • @lsyrke I`m not trying to be harsh. Norwegians just don`t seem to reconize this fact. It`s pretty embarrasing. We start very good saying "Nynorsk and bokmål are writings" and then "but we speak nynorsk." How are forreigners suppose to understand what norwegian is about? How are norwegians suppose to understand our own language? We simply have to keep speach and writings away.

  • @lsyrke No, you won`t find under any circumstances someone speak either nynorsk or bokmål. Nynorsk and bokmål are defined writings. Norway in nynorsk is Noreg but not a single person in Norway says Noreg. That`s just one proof that nynorsk and bokmål are writings and impossible to speak.

  • @lsyrke Speach and writing are two different medium. The speach is auditiv. The writing is visual. The speach is free. The writing is normed. Noone will correct your speach with a red pen.

And then the same old answare. Yes, I know what you mean. Do you know what I mean?

  • I didn't know there was this Swedish version! Of course I am used to the Norwegian version, but this is a beautiful work as well. Congratulations!

  • I wish I had her voice. <3

  • Wonderful and beautiful Song!Thanks for uploading,but,dear AedeusLeonora,Sissel Kyrkjebo is a GREATEST FEMALE-ARTIST and,forgive us Cecilia too,all flags(points)are going to HER!

    Greetings from Georgia!

  • One has certainly studied the other hand, definitely not, it's a shame because it feels and intuits.
