  • The Potassium Permanganate is oxidising the sugar and being reduced itself and the change of colour is due to the oxidation state of the manganese: Mn(VII)O4- (purple) > Mn(VI)O4 2- (dark green) and so on through the colour changes as the manganese ion decreases in oxidation state
