Spain hit four past Italy for unique tournament hat-trick

Spain have become the first European football nation to win three back-to-back major tournaments, and they did it with an assured 2-0 win over Italy in the Euro 2012 final in Kiev, Ukraine.

The first goal came on just 14 minutes, on one of a number of early threatening attacks, Manchester City's David Silva pinging his header into the back of Gianluigi Buffon's goal from a Cesc Fabregas cross.

Italy threatened immediately afterwards with Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas forced into a period of vigilance, but there was a second goal before half-time, when new Barcelona signing Jordi Alba exchanged passes with club team-mate Andres Iniesta before rifling into the Italian goal.

The Azzurri sent on Alessandro Di Natale in the second half in search of goals, but Spain kept the back door firmly locked and made sure of victory when Chelsea men Fernando Torres and Juan Mata -- both employed as substitutes -- added to La Roja's tally.
