No B-Day - Purple People Power in Italy. A protest against Italian premiere Silvio Berlusconi, originally organised via Facebook and not supported by any major opposition party, gathered well over half a million people at one of the biggest rallies the city has seen this year. Probably the largest Facebook rally ever. Naturally, with that many protesters you get all sorts. Some were waving book-size pieces of red cardboard in anger at the cover-up of the killing of an anti-mafia judge, Giovanni Falcone. Others were advocating the legalising of marijuana. But most were there to vent their anger at the corruption of Italian politics in general and against the prime minister in particular. Organisers had called for protesters to wear purple as a sign of a new wave in Italy - Purple people power. The Italian flag was given a fourth colour by many protesters - creating a new symbol of resistance against a regime and political class deemed by many as corrupt and incompetent.
