Speakers: Jonathan Nieves, Youth Farmer, and Daniel Ross, Executive Director, Nuestras Raíces. Nuestras Raíces is a grass-roots organization that promotes economic, human and community development in Holyoke, Massachusetts through projects relating to food, agriculture and the environment. The organization builds cultural pride as well as the ability of low-income Latinos in Holyoke to address environmental, economic development, substance abuse, and food security issues. Many of the members grew up on the farms of rural Puerto Rico and many first came to the Northeast as migrant farm workers. The projects based on agriculture, such as markets and community gardens, and utilize the skills and knowledge that participants already have in the community. The strategy is to build on this asset using this opportunity to improve the community and to teach to a younger generation.
