Likewise, woe unto the politician that does not respect the fact that the USA is a Constitutional Republic, with democratic institutions. Not a lot of people know there is a difference between this and a democracy - there is a VAST difference, and the reason why we have the system of checks and balances in place in the three branches of government.

The United States is both a Republic and a Democracy - these are not exclusive terms.
In a Republic there is no Monarch- the source of sovereignty is the people - i.e. the nation belongs to its citizens, not its King. A Republic can be dictatorship.
A Democracy derives its authority from the consent and participation of the governed. In a direct Democracy, like ancient Athens, the people governed directly. We are a "Representative Democracy" that elects those who represent us.
