The Making of an Underground Film about Piero Heliczer's film Venus In Furs, with the Velvet Underground performing Heroin, Heliczer joining in on saxophone.
---
This is, I think, the only circulating excerpt from The Velvet Underground's first TV appearance. The 31 seconds here are taken from the 1996 BBC documentary 'Dancing in the Streets'. Shorter versions of the same clip have been more recently used in the John Cale documentary from 1998, and the 'Seven Ages of Rock' documentary. No sound because the original soundtrack isn't included on any of the circulating versions.

If anyone has a more complete version of this, please share it!

  • Detailed description in the book "Velvet Underground: New York Art ".

  • @msturdy i don't think it was "Heroin". It was never played with a bass.

  • @dedhedsimpson You need to ask?

  • The Andy Warhol Museum has a copy/original of Venus in Furs.

  • Minus sound this is utter madness O.o

  • @Rottenhaus Oh yeah, that's terrible. The BBC did it too. They reused tape and also recycled film because of the silver content, according to legend anyway. Or maybe they just threw it away as you say. It's a crying shame.

  • @MowgliX

Unlikely it was kept-film was trashed and magnetic tape was erased and reused as a matter of course during that time. Even NASA did it: magnetic tape of Apollo 11 was erased and used for recording satellite info.

  • @owsleythebear I wish I could be a time traveling fly or some other insect, sit on the wall in there, and enjoy the show.

  • no sound???

  • Wow, thanks! I wonder if there is a complete version somewhere in the vaults of the American TV companies? Did they keep things like this back then? Did they realize it will all be precious historic documents?
