The Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry was begun around 1410 by the Limbourg brothers, although left incomplete by them and decoration continued over several decades by other artists and owners.
Though the majority of Petrarch's output was in Latin, the Canzoniere was written in the vernacular, a language of trade, despite Petrarch's view that Italian was less adequate for expression. The "Canzoniere" contains a number of canzoni (29), sestine (9), madrigals (4), and ballate (7). Its central theme is the poet's love for Laura, a woman Petrarch allegedly met on April 6, 1327, in the Church of Sainte Claire in Avignon.
Although Giovanni Battista Pergolesi died at the age of 26, he is credited with masterpieces in two fields of music: La serva padrona (The Maid as Mistress, c.1733), an intermezzo, or short comic opera; and a setting of the Stabat Mater for treble voices and strings. His fame rests chiefly on the popularity of La serva padrona, although much of his best music is contained in two serious operas, Salustia (1732) and L'Olimpiade (1735).
