The alleygating scheme prevents burglars and other trespassers from accessing the rear and side of terraced properties by erecting lockable gates in alleyways or footpaths shared by a number of houses. Fly-tipping, vandalism and littering are also reduced, leading to further benefits for the residents through reduced insurance costs and increased property value.
Funded by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council and delivered by environmental charity Groundwork Pennine Lancashire, the scheme was rolled out during the course of 2009 and, after the successful installation of three pilot schemes, the programme is now fully operational. There are now twelve fully implemented schemes across the Borough, with the largest scheme having twelve individual gates protecting the rear alleys of approximately a hundred businesses and residential properties in the Mill Hill area of Blackburn.
