Shobana in Manichitrathazhu.
The film which gave birth to some SAD remakes: Chandramukhi, Bhool Bhulaiyaa.
The actress Shobana went on to receive the National Award for the best actress for an amazing portrayal of a Multiple Personality Disorder patient.
Directed by: Fazil.
II-unit directors: Siddique Lal, Priyadarshan, Sibi Malayil.
Starring: Mohanlal, Shobana, Suresh Gopi.
Manichitrathazhu (The Ornate Lock) is a 1993 psychological thriller/horror Malayalam film directed by Fazil and written by Madhu Muttam. The story is influenced by a tragedy that happened in the Alummoottil palace of a famous central Travancore ezhava family in the 19th century.[1] The movie was an unusual theme in Malayalam cinema but proceeded to become a big hit. Several other prominent directors such as Siddique-Lal, Priyadarshan and Sibi Malayil served as second-unit directors on the movie. Shobhana was awarded the National Film Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of the central character Ganga.
After its runaway success in Kerala, it was remade after nearly 10 years in various languages, including Kannada (Apthamitra), Tamil (Chandramukhi), Bengali (Rajmohol), and Hindi (Bhool Bhulaiyaa). All of them went on to become commercial successes.

  • the song and the dance are amazing.............actually i saw chandramukhi and bhool bhuliya and among all of these i think that chandramukhi's song and dance are the best..........................i also saw apthamitra but i think it was not as gud as the above three///////////

  • @nabarun83: Lol dude. Chandramukhi is such a sad movie

  • @nabarun83 Comparing this song with any other songs in the remakes is heresy... nothing can match Shobhana's performance.... no flashy make-ups no digital effects... she is just awesome

  • Manichitrathazhu definitely gives off a different vibe than the others. I was able to follow the sequence a lot better with this one, the scene switching was good too. The actress does look crazed as well as her dancing. She was able to switch between awkward and graceful, very nice.

I intend to see more remakes, as I found this particular scene interesting.

  • @nabarun83 chandramuki was worst compare to all, bhool bhulaiya was not good. it Aptamitra aftr Manichitrathazhu. Jyothika is a Punjabi she dnst hav South dance touch...

  • The story is influenced by a tragedy that happened in the Alummoottil palace of a famous central Travancore ezhava family in the 19th century.

  • I love this movie, but even if the performance is just fantastic.. I have to be honest with myself, for this "final" song, I really enjoy much more the song from Chandramukhi and Bhool Bhuliya.

  • @Decembirth -

:) Credit goes to Shabhana... Extraordinarily talented dancer+actress...

  • @flashhunk Saw the 3 movies in the same order as u... Wud still say that Manichitrathazhu wins hands down...

  • @flashhunk Right. I really hated Chandramukhi. I like Manichitrathazhu and Aapthamitra. Bhool Bhulaya is moderate.. neither good nor bad.

  • @nabarun83 you must be a tamilan! ;)

art has no bounds, in terms of acting its manichitrattazh and aptamitra.

  • goes without saying tat shobana is the best of the lot... she was the one danced like she was really possessed.. others looked like they escaped from some mental asylum

  • This movie and the way its remakes were made best illustrates the state of Indian movie industry. Acting requires acting skills and not modelling skills.

  • @nabarun83

manichitrathazhu can share the stage with some of the best movies in world cinema. can the same be said of the remakes. The were not remakes they are spoofs.
