Japanese people talk with a high voice...

K-ON!

Is this the same in restaurants? Because Japan and Korea seem to be very similar culturally, and in Korean restaurants it's common to reply on the way out.

i love it when they all sing it out in energetic unison at Sushi train in Australia :D lol

there is a genuine izakaya (japanese bar) here and they call "irashaimasen"
seems very busy they are loud and it is fun to have a drink or eat sth. there : )

I wouldn't acknowledge them verbally, just a nod is enough. But none the less I like the proffessionalism that Japanese companies/stores show to the arriving/departing customer as most staff that work in these sort of places where I live don't even speak to you even when serving you. Not all are like that, but most are jobsworths. Also in France, the shop owners and staff at bigger places will greet you with "Bonjour" and its inpolite if you don't reply back.

That's a very busy store! Look how many people are coming in and out. That automatic door never gets a rest!

On an unrelated note, another n00b problem I had in Japan was that I kept forgetting about their payment trays when I was buying things. Pretty much every store and restuarant has a little tray at the cash register where you place you cash or credit card. But I kept forgetting about it and trying to place it in the cashier's hand directly as we do in Canada. My Japanese friend was soo irritated by me argh.
