This 11-song performance from 1984 is undeniable evidence that Liz Story has established herself as one of the most distinctive composers and pianists of our time. The three-time Grammy nominee fashions a deeply personal style which takes shape at the elusive transitions between classical and folk with a rich jazz harmony of pioneers like Bill Evans, Storys chief inspiration. More economical than Keith Jarrett, more florid and changeable than Winston, Liz Story finds a compelling middle ground between jazz harmony and classical technique, outside improv and sturdy songcraft, complex performance and inner stillness which is an audiovisual delight.

  • brilliantly expressive.....as always. thanks for posting ! _/\_

  • This brought my heart somewhere it's never been...

  • she's a composer of the highest order , a unique talent , i'm glad to see she is working again

  • Thank you for posting.

  • @snipe1963 I would agree that she has great talent, but disagree that she's 'unnoticed'. She's had a long career, critical acclaim and major label contracts (Windham Hill, RCA). I'd say that her career is lower profile lately (she lives in Arizona now, I think), but there are a couple of upcoming performances listed on her website. Also, her releases after about 1990 have been less frequent and, IMHO, less interesting than her first 5 albums.

  • Thanks for posting. Her talent is so immense, yet so unnoticed.

    Complete shame:-(

  • Wow, what a performance - thanks for posting! Is this available for purchase? Love the '80s 'big hair'! Seriously, though, what a talent! - this music is so evocative - just fantastic. I had the good fortune to see her live in 1989 or so. Love the 'explosions' of rapid notes she gets in 'Toy Soldiers' and the long 'runs' in 'Bradley's Dream.' Interesting to learn about the political references after all these years; also, there's a skip in the DVD at 23:54. Never mind those - just listen!

  • i saw this show on this tour at the university of Kentucky

  • incomparable.

  • I love how she touches the keys so delicately and yet creating such an immense and powerful sound without surplus of unnecessary notes.
