From 1948 to 1989 something like 7000 people were killed under apartheid, only about 2000 of whom died at the hand of the state. The balance died at the hands of the liberation movements (their own people needed to be kept in line). From 1990 to 94 more than 14000 died again the vast majority at the hands of the ANC in their struggle for dominance over the competing factions.
