  • Awesome! I'm a newbie jazz guitar player, but I'm always jealous at you piano guys. It's amazing how versatile a piano is. I love how all notes are layed down horizontally and you just "reach" them. A lot better to do beautiful improvised voicings.

I wish it wasn't such a hard instrument!

  • @kaoD thank you for the comment. i would love the play the guitar- if it weren't such a hard instrument! please check out my lesson site jazzpianoonline. com if you get a chance.

  • why is it cut off??? you were saying something... but nice solo :)

  • Jazz is one of the most complicated and intricate musical genres around. To compose, let alone improvise, a jazz piece takes a fair amount of intelligence.

And besides that, how do you know he wasn't referring to the pianist and not the genre? Take it easy.

  • @MrJohnnyG6 Improvisation

  • Yes, what I the title of this song?

  • @kaoD Hey, I can't argue with that. After all, you can't beat music. :)

  • @moneyquickeasy then we agree, each instrument has its own ups and downs, though I don't think the guitar wins overall.

    Overall, MUSIC wins ;)

  • @kaoD Well, if you has a 7-string guitar you could play that particular inversion. (You can also play a 7th octave E with a 24-fret guitar, I believe.) But that's one example, okay. Look, I guess when you're talking strictly harmony, the piano is more diverse. But overall, the guitar wins. Musically speaking, and how the musician can express himself. With guitar, you have the option to bend notes, legato techniques, harmonics, and so on. You can get so many different sounds out of the thing.

  • @moneyquickeasy for instance: can you play an E chord using the second inversion, B as the bass, and E2? Nope, you can't. Can you pay E on the seventh octave? Nope you can't.

You get only one extra color for almost all notes (not all of them are repeated) but you pay a BIIIIIG price.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE guitar, but piano is a much more versatile instrument when harmony's on the game :P

  • @moneyquickeasy I only agree with the wide color palette but, I'm sorry, I can't really tell color apart that much when I'm playing rich harmonies. Sure it's an exceptional resource of musicality for soloing, but I'm talking about harmony here.

The piano limit is the one key-one note (which, imho, is actually a benefit), but the guitar limit is your hand.

You can't play every possible inversion in guitar, which you can actually do in piano (and extend as much as you like.)

  • @kaoD You get plenty more possibilities with piano? I disagree. Here's why: on the piano keyboard, there's only one key that corresponds to one particular note and it's octave. So there's only one way to play middle C, for instance. However, on guitar, there's many different locations to play the same note on the fretboard. This allows an widely varied palette of inversions and different colors, much more so than the keyboard.
