Calling The Shots:
Spontaneous Painting with George Pratt

In this download, watch renowned graphic novelist George Pratt paint a WWI soldier at the first ever TAD workshop in Kansas City, MO.

In order to keep the entire painting process alive and invigorated, George begins without a thumbnail or a toned canvas. With nothing fixed, this puts him directly in the driver's seat as he works. At the same time he is also listening to the painting, and at one point even comments that his favorite parts of a painting are often accidents. This push and pull is a unique part of George's style, and he generously shares the decades of experience that inform his decisions.

As this video was recorded in classroom setting, George also responds to the questions of the students around him, providing the viewer with an added level of insight. If you've never seen a George Pratt demo you'll definitely want to pick this up. If you have, then you already know you want to pick this one up.

  • Illestofill, your name is a Ringling reference. Do you have some sort of grudge against George? Part of the reason this video is great is because he shares his life experiences and the journey he took learning how to draw and paint. If Jeff Jones were to see your comment here she'd slap you for aggressive ignorance. For a student like you who has much learning about art left to do, it would be better for you to keep your mind receptive to learning rather than cherrypick styles. George is amazing

  • George Pratt is one of the most generous and helpful teachers I have ever had.

Let me guess, your idea of a good painting is copying the cover art of your favorite video game character in nauseating detail. Artists' talent and style come from their experiences and studying old masters, their peers, and the world around them to gain knowledge. He's sharing his knowledge. And I guarantee you every one of those students in that room fully appreciate it and in realizing its value are gaining something from it. Pity for you.

That statement just goes to show you have no idea what you're talking about. He probably just gave you more valuable art information in 3 1/2 minutes than you've learned your entire life...and it all went over your head.

  • Such a good video. I had the privilege of being there live. Now I get to relive the words of wisdom

  • damn, gotta get this.

  • wow. that's amazing!
