Actually he was asked to leave 'cos he was suffering from bipolar disorder which led to a nervous breakdown. He was exhibiting erratic behaviour and even bite one of the crew over an argument.

David (Northern Calloway) died of stomach cancer.

I wondered the same thing too. It was mentioned on Sesame Street that David moved to the farm to live with his grandmother but, that wasn't true. The reason why David wasn't on Sesame Street anymore because he was told to leave the show in the year 1989 because of his bad health which was contagious. So the reason why the Sesame Street cast lied to say he moved to the farm because they probably didn't want to embarrass him while he was still alive. Then in the year 1990, David passed away.
