A Canadian farmer tells us about his farrow-to-finish farm where he raises pigs from birth to market weight.

Transcript:

John -- Our family's been in the pig business ever since 1966 when my parents bought their first farm and started farming. I joined them after I got done my college. My brother joined a few years later when he got done his college and spent a couple years in the work force. Today it's me my brother and our families, and our parents are still actively involved, while semi-retired. And we farm pigs because that's what we know. Currently my older children are involved in a swine club in our country here. This year we happen to be working on nutrition so we're trying to teach the kids how to properly feed an animal and what happens when you don't. In conjunction with that, we're also raising up market hogs for a show we plan on going to shortly. I think all parents are happy to show their children what their involved in. Agriculture is certainly right up there as far as an industry that likes to promote itself and the best way we do that is to show our children what we do and then let them decide if it's an occupation worth pursuing.

  • Very nice farm, the pigs look healthy and have great body condition. The barns also look great. More videos like this are needed to educate the public about food production.

  • Disgusting place, confining the pig like that. nickoli889 the pig is fat because it can't exercise, for God's sake that's animal abuse. Where's the straw for bedding, where's the grass/mud etc? It's not natural. You just treat these animals as objects to make money from. They are SENTIENT BEINGS! There's no way in the world that you are rearing happy pigs and animals that are stressed release a hormone into their meat that is transferred to humans, especially when it's slaughtered. Shame on you.

  • the metal crates arn't as bad as all of you city people think. if there so bad for the animals why are they so fat and in such good body condition? a farmer has to be as efficent as possible if a sow is treated lik shit she will preforme lik shit thus loosing the owner money. so fuck all you tree hugers. and if you dont like it then show me how easy it will be to let them roam free and make a profit.

  • Gestation crates are a completely unethical and an appalling way of raising pigs. There's a reason why nations and states are continuing to prohibit their use.

  • Don't comment if you have nothing good to say...I raise hogs for 4-h I have to wait 8months after the fair to get more...u want a farm when I'm older...

  • @paulusnicolaes u got a better way

  • I'm a huge activist against the common practices in todays pig farming industry. It's sickening. That sow, laying there on her side, she can't even get away for one second from her little babies. They constantly suck on her until she's bleeding. All she can do is lay there. And it goes on and one, many more cruel things happen in this hidden, sick industry. We have one of the largest countries in the world, why can't these pigs walk around outside?

  • With all this metal and caged animals, you are not a farmer. You are a pork producer. Please don't defile the name and image of a farmer.

  • i am glad that your farm is cleaner then most others some farms like that are very dirty and the pigs are sick
