2968 was formally launched into service for the first time in preservation on the Severn Valley Railway on 13th April 1991, and is seen here making a fairly reserved ascent of Eardington Bank. 2968 had arrived on the SVR in the 1970's from Woodham's Scrapyard at Barry and underwent a thorough restoration that really started to get moving in the mid to late 1980's. It had its first test steamings in late 1990. In the late 2000's, as 42968, it can be seen fairly regularly in action on the SVR.
On a personal note, this clip effectively marks the end of my video coverage of the SVR, most of which was from the late 1980's and early 1990's. I spent a lot of happy hours beween October 1987 and October 1990 capturing SVR action, and this clip of 2968 was one of only two things I filmed during the whole of 1991. (The other was a fairly mediocre clip of 60009 Union Of South Africa on 31st December)
2968 is also special to me, because in May 1993 it became the first loco I actually drove, on a driving school special train between Kidderminster and Bewdley. I'll never forget the moment I first opened the regulator...;-)

  • I haven't driven any locos since 1997.I did drive 75069 in Nov 1993 & 48773(8233) in April 1994(shame there's no footage of me climbing Eardington Bank;-)

I also drove some locos at Llangollen,60103(4472)Flying Scotsman in Feb 1995,5080 Defiant in March 1996,7822 Foxcote Manor in Nov 1996 & 45593 Kolhapur in April 1997.

Some footage does exist of me driving the A3(mostly poor, done by bystander)& 75069.Might post it sometime for a laugh!

I'd like to drive the full length of SVR again one day.

  • some LMS designs suit sporting their LMS livery better than BR, but I don't think that's the case with the mogul.

  • This like the only thing that happened in the world on the day I was born.. and I have to write about in School :S

  • Another fine shot on Eardington Bank, especially with a strong North Eastery blowing. It's nice to see other videos of the line other than your own during that period...5*

  • the fact that was the first engine you drove is awsome shame theres no more old school footage after that though you still driving?
