Rough Magik (part of the Dreams of Cthulhu DVD) is the pilot episode for a proposed BBC television series starring Paul Darrow (Blake's 7, Doctor Who) and Gerrard McArthur (A Touch of Frost, The Life and Death of Peter Sellers). The Night Scholars, a clandestine organization setup to monitor the effects of the alien sleeping god Cthulhu, have come to a single, incontrovertible conclusion: Cthulhu is waking and is affecting weaker minded people (Dreamers) causing death and chaos. With the help of the mysterious Mr. Moon (Paul Darrow), they launched an aggressive campaign against the Dreamers but were disbanded by the Home Office after they trod on the toes of some powerful people. Now years later, the old magic is returning, Cthulhu is rising, and there are more Dreamers than Mr. Moon can handle as he struggles to rebuild the Night Scholars before its too late. The film also includes an audio commentary by writer/producer Stephen W. Parsons, a production still slideshow, and an eight-page color booklet on the characters and proposed episodes of the Rough Magik series.

Also on this DVD are Bob Fugger's short films Terrible Old Man & From Beyond, and Christian Matzke's short films Experiment 17 & Experiment 18--The Hexenhammer Projekt. Bonus features include an interview with Lovecraft scholar S.T. Joshi, and an interview with the crew of Terrible Old Man.

  • Rough Magik would have been a terrific series, its a shame that the BBC has a commitment to keeping anything vaguely intelligent off the screens.

Had someone made the pilot in the seventies it would have got a series. That's 'dumbing down' for you I suppose.

  • Cthulhu isn't indescribable. he's pretty easy for anybody to picture in their heads. it's His size, the nature of R'lyeh, and the effect that Cthulhu and His minions would have on the psyche of Humanity that's indescribable. If He is here, the Old Ones would be let through the gate as well. Yog-Sothoth bleeds the doorway. The Silver Key is irrelevant.

  • @reptomicus

it wasnt ever said Cthulhu was indescribable and furthermore Lovecraft uses alot of adjectives but ironically describes little most is still left to the imagination

  • does anyone know where i can find the nyarlathotep movie by christian matzke?

  • In 2001, we scored the music for the short film " The Terrible Old Man " that is on this DVD release.

Keep up the great work at Lurker Films !

  • Did we watch the same pilot? Granted, I'll give that this had a "We wish this was the Dark Shadows version of a Lovecraft story" feel to it...but it was awful. It was painful to watch. I know we're all starved for a good Lovecraft adaption but this wasn't it. There are more films on this particular collection, but watching this made me hesitant to check them out. Watch "In The Mouth of Madness" instead. Not a direct Lovecraft adaptation, but certainly a good send up that indirectly pays tribute.

  • They used parts of the Nightmare on Elm Street score as temp music! I saw this awhile back. I liked it alot, that pilot should have been picked up.

  • If Cthulhu is indescribable, why is it described in the story Call of Cthulhu and is even recreated in sculpture numerous times in the story? For all the talk about Lovecraft not showing the creatures, most of his creatures are decribed in his stories, with only a couple exceptions usually because the main characters don't encounter it and have no frame of reference.
