Redundatron

Amongst the ruins of post-apocalyptic Sharon, Pennsylvania, an epic battle is about to take place.

An unknown militant group is scouring the wreckage for resources and supplies. When one of their scouts turns up missing, a team of armed personnel investigate. Little do they know, they will end up face to face with the mysterious Redundatron.

The concept for Redundatron was born in the back of the Rebreather van on the way home from Chicago in summer of 2010. Everyone was exhausted and I was feeling frustrated that most of the artwork I was making at the time felt like a chore. I wanted my next project to be fun, like the silly action movies I made when I was a kid. Chad and I talked about electric war hammers and jetpacks, and doing all the things we thought were awesome, without much concern for a story.

When I got home, I got together with frequent StarSun collaborator Louis DelBene to fully flesh the rest of the story and coordinate a plan. Chad would be Redundatron, and we would get our close friends to be his victims. The name came from Chad's electronic music project at the time. We would set it in Chad's home town of Sharon, Pa . It was all kind of an in joke, but everything would be shot straight, because we thought that would be more ridiculous.

Well, I'm not going to get in to it all here, but after we started shooting, multiple people couldn't complete the project due to various real life issues. This included Chad and most of our soldiers, so Lou stepped in as a victim, and I reluctantly became Redundatron.

By the time we were done with shooting, Lou and Billy were opening the Stone Tavern in Kent, and I was back to school, so everything got shelved for a while. Throughout the winter I would periodically pull out some Redundatron scenes to play with. There's a lot of hit or miss stuff in it, but it was a lot of fun, which was the goal. I learned a ton about After Effects, and acquired a new camera since we made this, so hopefully the next project will be much better, and more awesome.

I think you have a valid point there. I'd much rather see creation than destruction myself. For the way this short came about though, it was an essential part of the process. The 2 biggest reasons are that Redundatron is mostly a spoof on our friend Chad, who told me he has dreams where he's smashing everything, it's my take on a Chad super hero/villain character. I also wanted it to be like the movies I made when I was a kid. They all revolved around pop culture related violence.

  • I liked the technique, acting and music. You have lots of creative energy. The only defect is wasting it on a destructive plot. How about a movie on what people can create that doesn't exist rather than on tearing down what others have created? - Dick in SC
