I was always interested in extreme engineering, and no engineering is more extreme than the one developed for wartime use. War research has for the better or worse dominated research funds, benefiting generations of people after it has killed many on the battlefield. I learned a lot in college, because we had a mechanical engineering professor who was a former major in a weapon engineering institute - he was decomissioned 25 years ago, but he can still teach a lot.
