Athair (Father) by Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill. Produced as part of a series of six short irish language poetry films for TG4 in 2008 called Nead an Dreoilín (The Wren's Nest).
I'd love to learn Irish and did indeed once try,,,,,,,,,,however the teacher as nice as she was had a mixed class and allowed 2 loud arrogant people to not just dominate the class but to waste precioous time too. I was not impressed. It seems awful that Irish is not more widely spoken and that the Irish to not assert their identity and culture in the face of the new colonialism of the EU.
Wonderful to hear Nuala's voice again, after many years - and the same poignancy as I remember in her words; even though I have to limp along in English. Diolch yn fawr Nuala!
U speak from land of Gaels/What super powers, drive them mad!/1 or 2 words,I can interpret/ barely what u recite/English words pacify. While somewhere behind/ in that dark, cruel curtains past!/Dripping red/Humor in the glass & the jar/Where r those ancient thoughts & ideas? Now on the floor/Poetic sounds from afar!/They wrench with all their might!/But through poetry, music, or song/U cannot kill/Those Gaelic words, in the wind I feel, they breathe on..live on../Down with the curtain..maith ar tu
