Six Concertos in Seven Parts (1766) - No. 6 in B flat major
Capel Bond
Bassoon: Sally Jackson
Roy Goodman
The Parley of Instruments
This last in the set is ostensibly a concerto grosso, with a concertino group of two violins, bassoon and cello supported by organ continuo and in terms of structure it does follow the form of a Concerto da Camera. However, stylistically is more like a solo concerto - instead of the "contest" between the concertino group and the ripieno, the solo bassoons voice is heard between orchestral ritornelle. Also evident is some of the Mannheim influence, no doubt due to the arrival of Abel and J.C. Bach in London a few years prior. Of particular note is the exceptional lyrical quality of the opening movement. Some speculation has been made about a relationship between this concerto and a lost Bassoon concerto by William Boyce, I don't feel this would necessarily be the case: there is little in common between the airy galanterie presented here and Boyce's robust and masculine style, entrenched in the high English Baroque. Still, if the latter concerto was to appear, it would be an interesting comparison to make.
The image is of Coombe Abbey in Coventry - the city in which Capel Bond worked for most of his life.
Impressed, pleased, and grateful.
