Here in America, Irish pubs have fat old white men sitting completely silently eating chili and sipping light beer

Great pub, great music. And the quality of the musicians you hear in some of these places, like Taaffe's, Tig Coeli, the Quays, is simply astounding. Love the atmosphere.

@CzechDetectingChap - I can't jam, I'm not musical. I couldn't play even play two sticks if I tried! I just love the atmosphere of a place where musical minded people turn up and jam, and I could have a few brews, and be happy untill an inconsiderate table or chair runs into my path...

@verticalsmurf the Czech Republic is a lot like Ireland, if you come here you can jam, no problem, I do it every week with my slovenly mates.

As a traveller, if you're ever feeling homesick or are looking for english-speakers, seek out the local Irish pub. There's always one, whether you're in Prague or Tokyo.
I'm jealous. Here in Australia, the pub isn't a communal gathering place. People here go to the pub to get pissed or play the pokies.
If there is live music, a cover charge usually has to be paid.
A person can't just rock up to the pub with their guitar, violin or banjo in tow, expecting other likewise minded people to be there so they can Jam.
I'd rather be in Ireland.
