V. LADY GODIVA
11th c. Coventry
Appalled by the high taxes levied by her husband on the people of Coventry, Godiva agreed to ride through the streets of Coventry naked, upon guarantee they would be lowered. This charts her altruistic journey.
Peep now their eyes at Coventry's fool,
Foolish the fool who rideth a mule.
Shrouded by tresses in fear I ride,
In fear of reprisal, of scorn and chide.
Scold not my saddle and scold not my steed.
Scold not my canter, my canter will feed.
Scorn me not, chide me not, scold not my deed.
Bleed not my Coventry
Let them peep as I ride,
Peep with their eyes, my sunlit disguise,
As sunlit I rise.
Bathing my chest, thawing my breast.
My Coventry's calling, the taxes now falling, so peep!
Peep now their eyes at Coventry's fool,
Foolish my Lord and foolish his rule.
Lay down your dresses for freedom ride,
Be shamèd your husband to fear his bride.
