This is a performance of John Cage's 'Credo In Us' (1942) by Ensemble 64.8, the percussion group at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. This is the first video part of two. Be sure to catch the second!

The performers (left to right):
Ilia Radoslavov - piano & tom-tom
Shawn Savageau - tin cans, buzzer, & tom-tom
Eric Retterer - phonograph & radio
Morris Palter - tin cans & muted gongs

This performance was given on November 21st, 2009, in the Davis Concert Hall of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.

The program notes that follow were written by Ensemble 64.8 member, Trevor Saint.

"Described by avant-gardist John Cage as a work of satire, 'Credo In Us' thoughtfully employs the use of phonograph, radio, electric buzzer, muted gongs, tom-toms, and tin-cans to create an urban soundscape. Originally written to accompany a dance work by Merce Cunningham and Jean Erdman, Cage, wanting more percussive sounds, asks the pianist to mute the strings of the piano, as well as strike the piano body (like a percussionist). This piece marks Cage's first use of outside material (phonograph/radio) as a compositional voice."

Ensemble 64.8 is directed by Morris Palter and is the Resident percussion group at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. Recent engagements for the group include multiple concerts with famed percussionist Bob Becker (NEXUS, Steve Reich Ensemble), a concert in New York with Valerie Naranjo (Saturday Night Live, Lion King), and a tour of Alaskan high schools including performances in North Pole, Fairbanks, Fort Greely (Black History Month celebration concert), Delta, and Anchorage.
