Then in 1978 Alydar races in the east coast, and Affirmed in the west until the Derby
The Kentucky Derby: Affirmed
The Preakness: Affirmed
The Belmont: Affirmed
The Travers: Alydar*

*Affirmed finished first, but interfered with Alydar on the far turn, and was disqualified and Alydar, finishing second, was placed first

It is amazing that Alydar is the only horse to come second in the Triple Crown races.

I never would have expected Alydar to win the Derby if I'd watched their 2 year old series. When it's head to head it's always Affirmed.

I remember a very sharp guy pointing that out on the eve of the '78 Derby. He couldn't understand why Alydar was favored.
