Yes - they were very old and part of a power station that stopped working in the 1970s. They were very striking landmarks though, and were right next to the motorway so were really popular, so lots of people came to see them off in style.

i went i saw this from the other side its very sad ..good vid this ......if they couldnt knock em down with the explosion it poo poos the sayings that they were unsafe a bit doesnt it !!!

The last bit of the northern tower collapsed after a couple of hours apparently.
