Sometime in February 1990 my sister, nephew, parents and I went down to The Northport Five and Dime. I brought my camcorder to take some final images of this wonderful store, perhaps the centerpiece of Main Street, in the town I grew up in, Northport New York.

According to a NY Times article the store was owned by Charles Wenderoth who died the previous year, and was closing after 53 years. Now, more than twenty years later, it is still very much missed. The clothing store The GAP for a relatively short period of time opened for business in place of the 5 & 10, but did not last long. A store such as that never seemed to quite fit into the type of town Northport is. The building has remained unoccupied ever since.

I hope those who remember the 5 &10 will enjoy seeing it even as shown here, liquidating its shelves, closed off from going in the back of the store, and not allowed to go up the stairs where even more good things could be found.

  • Wow! I remember the lady at the cash register.

    What a trip! Nice Video

  • I love the sound of the creeking old floors.. and the sqeeky door...If I were a millionaire I would buy it and turn it into a Five and Dime for fun.. except it would maybe be a $5 and $10 LOL! thanks for the memories..

  • thank you for this fantastic walk down memory lane. i spent many hours in this store growing up in norhtport- 'the 10 cent store' is what we called it. at every age for any occasion the 10 cent store had something for you. end of an era when it closed. thank you!

  • Wow, a part of my childhood, thanks for posting. I grew up and was always downtown inthe 1970's - 80's. Loved the 5&10 and it's squeeky wood floors, swinging doors, toy dept upstairs and housewares downstairs. I remember well the cashier shown at work in your video, I think she had a twin who also worked at the store. Haven't been home in 10 years but ironic that Ingerman's Dept. Store was then a 5&10 wannabe, don't know what it or the original is now but thanks for bringing me back.
