Relief or spin-only reel grinding: Which method is really the easiest, quickest and most effective? This edition of GCSAA TV MythBusters takes a look at the debate between relief or spin-only reel grinding, and John Deere Golf weighs in on the issue.
@xerocytesteve Depending on the amount of metal removed there will be a significant amount of metal that will remain as a burr on the edge of the metal. I find that if a lot of metal has been removed to true the reel back to cylindrical a very light backlap with a 180 to 220 grit compound will make the initial setting of the reel last much longer. Only a few seconds is needed to remove any burr.

if you are setting reel to bedknife gap lightly then you do not have tension. reels last longer spin grinding because you are not taking 50 percent of the reel blade off just to relief grind . if your mechanic cannot adjust reel to bedknife correctly , then you will get an out of round reel . don't wait till you have dull reels before you have to regrind. keep them sharp. tees, and rough eat up reels. dry turf eats up reels. once us old guys retire, wait and see how golf shops survive.
