Hi, My Leyland National that did that route (though it mainly did 711). Its reg is NPD155L (LNC55). You dont happen to recall it do you?

The old fishtail pipes had a habit of falling off. This wasn`t just the pipe, but the whole silencer unit as well. These were very heavy and hot, as I found out when one fell off while I was going round Vauxhall Cross on Green Line route 706.

Am I going daft? I thought the exhaust on the National emerged from the offside just behind the rear wheel. Or is that a difference between the Mk I and II versions?
Nice little window into the world of working on such vehicles though, thanks for sharing.

Yes you are right, the mk1's came out just behind offside rear wheel,a fishtail one. The mk2's came straight out of the back on the near side,to my ears they sound much nicer.
Thanks for wathching and your comments.
