How about an Aussie, Harland Bernard Bodkin who is the only claimed inventor of the electric guitar (solid body, magnetic field pick up) that has documented proof. The Patent for his guitar is titled "electric guitar," in 1941. No other claimed inventors have been able to provide documented proof that they are in fact the inventor of the electric guitar.
I guess the debate continues..

Les invented multitracking and was a guitar pioneer, however he would be the first to tell you he did NOT invent the electric guitar! That honor belongs to Charlie Christian (who mounted a mic inside his guitar in the early 1900's) and Nickolai Telsla, who invented the guitar pickup.

He is not lying. Steel guitar and spanish guitar were there first but it was long time after that the first solid body was made by Fender. He came up with the idea in 1940-1941 of solid body and was shut down by guitar manufacturers. Ten years later they picked him up after he had already been recording number one hits with his recording equipment and his "clunkers". The other guitars were semi-hollow. There was a resonator guitar also which was close but not solid.

A lot of early Rickenbacker were Selmers that were rebranded. Everyone was swapping models back in those days. Fender rebranded Harmonys Acoustics, Rickenbacker rebranded Selmers Acoustics. Selmer rebranded Strats. Selmers go way back. That was Djangos' preference, and One of his Selmers was a prized posession of Les Paul, and was given to him by Djangos' wife. Les was a technical Pioneer and inspired others to follow, like Chet.

I WAS WRONG... Slingerland was four years behind Rickenbacker's 1935 SOLID BODY electro Spanish guitar, made from Bakelite. There is an article by George Gruhn. Again, PURE EVIDENCE! And if you don't who George Gruhn is, you shouldn't even attempt to argue about Les Paul. Just GOOGLE ---
Gruhn Rickenbacker bakelite 1935 ---click the first return, IF you can handle the truth and not lies!

PURE EVIDENCE !!! Les Paul made "The Log" in 1940. The Smithsonian has on display a Slingerland "Songster" SOLID BODY guitar made in ... 1939 !!! This proves conclusively Les Paul DID NOT invent the electric guitar, whether hollow body electric or solid body electric. He is a liar. Just google-- Slingerland Songster 1939. YOU WILL SEE THE TRUTH. liarliarpantsonfire

Good for him for figuring out what he truly wanted to do with his life. He wanted to play in front of an audience without the hassle! Somewhere more laid back. He seemed really happy too.
What a gift to music he was. And a real class act. He sets an example for the self-absorbed music acts of the modern era.
