they are likely using it as a hip flexor and ab combined exercise,there is little if any isolated rectus abdominus contraction outside a gym,its always hip flexion as well.

notice when his butt moves forward,and his lower back starts bending as it does?he's already passed the point when the abs are fully contracted.Its called over flexion,+the hanging=overkill.the abs need little movement to fully contract,heres the test,stand with back against a wall,then contract your abs.you will notice that your shoulders come off the wall only slightly,if your doing it right.This is tha same when you're on the ground,except...

flexion without an external load isn't a problem. Plus, who said we're looking for isolation here. The body wants integration. Your comment is the typical paralysis by analysis.
