It is indeed a good idea to measure the energy being consumed in a house. This will let us know which appliances are gobbling up energy.

A tyrannical government could issue carbon ration cards, they already want to tax the air we breath. The ultimate government goal, in my opinion, is rationing. Dept of Energy also required the ability to remotely shut off your power. The utility company may have a goal of implementing a mind numbing, complex, tiered pricing model that will extract the maximum profit from the uninformed customer. How else do you extract more profits from a relatively fixed customer base?

The government could use targeted power shut off to meet emission goals or more devious objectives like selective punishment for dissenting citizens. Look at what they did in California recently, shutting off the water to an agricultural community to save a minnow, then opening the flood gates after certain legislators agreed to vote in favor of nationalized health care. The ability to cherry pick any US household and instantaneously shut off the power with a single key stroke is our new reality
Very neat idea. I assume that your are using magnetic fields, produced by the electricity flowing through the lines, to measure power usage. Am I close?

Yes, indeed... The TED has these inductive clamps that go around the main lines coming into the house. I *think* this is how it works: current in the main lines induce a magnetic field in the iron cores of the clamps. There are some small wires wrapped around the iron cores in those clamps with some circuitry that 'senses' the power flow. The other one, the BlueLine monitor, is just an optical sensor that watches your meter go around and around, no magic invisible fields involved.
