Where did the other dollar go to?

The initial payment of $30 is accounted for as the clerk takes $25, the bellhop takes $2, and the guests get a $3 refund. It adds up. After the refund has been applied, we only have to account for a payment of $27. Again, the clerk keeps $25 and the bellhop gets $2. This also adds up.There is no reason to add the $2 and $27 – the $2 is contained within the $27 already. Thus the addition is meaningless. Instead the $2 should be subtracted from the $27 to get the revised bill of $25.

@jv1701 The men paid 9 dollars each, and each got 3 dollars back. That equals thirty. The deception is making you add the Bellhop's money instead. The bellhop's 2 dollars has already been accounted for in the 27 that the three men paid.

It is deceptive wording. Assume the cash register starts out with 0 dollars. The men hand over to the man 30 dollars and the man puts it in the register. The register now has 30 dollars in it. The man takes 5 dollars out leaving 25 dollars in the register. The bellhop takes that 5 dollars, gives 1 to each man and keeps 2. So now the register has 25 dollars, each man has 1 dollar, and the bellhop has 2 dollars. 25 + 1 +1 +1 + 2= 30. It is a trick question because there is no missing dollar.

This is very simple. They each paid $9.33 as $25/3 is $8.33. Since they each got a dollar back they each paid $9.33.

just scrolled down and realized my post up top said something similar; sorry. LOL

$30 = $25 + $3 + $2. Not so hard if you just write down the numbers and not listen to the words of the riddle. All of the "actual" money is accounted for. The innkkeper has his fee of $25, the men got a refund of $3 and the bellhop stole $2. All of this equals $30. Hence: there is no missing dollar! I think the way the riddle is worded confuses the listener to confuse operations and think of the number 3 in terms of muliplication instead of how the riddle is addition and substraction.

thank you priceless this question is to easy if you guy listen to the question there is no flaw in math period its a simple equation the 2$ out of the the 27$ is already accounted for therefore we subtract come on kids say it w/ me s.u.b.t.r.a.c.t the 2$ from the 27$ which is the net payment if you know what that is and that will give you 25$ just what the clerk has.... so let me break it down (30-5=25 the sum of the equation} (5-2=3) (10-1=9) (9x3=27) (27-2= here it is 25 twenty five dollars

each man paid 8.66, a missing 1/3 of a dollar x 3 equals the missing dollar, they actually paid 8.66had the bell hop not kept the two,

But the bellhop kept the $2. So they each paid $9 ($10 - $1= $9). Three nines are $27, and hmmmm, the bellhop has $2, and hmmm....
