This is bassically what happens at the end of the North American Sega Genesis game with Joe fighting Zareth and then Zao.
Of course , the game is based off this anime : KujakuOh (Peacock King)
Another game based off this franchise was SpellCaster (which is what it was called in North America for the Sega Master system). It takes place before the events in Mystic Defender.
Funny how in the North American games, the main character was called Kane and later called Joe
