I went to Hie Shrine located in the center of Tokyo near Akasaka station for the annual chopstick burning festival to give thanks to my chopsticks and pray for good health. Though it seems a bit serious looking in the video, this is not a particularly solemn ceremony. It was a fun, small little ceremony, with what I imagine were mostly people who work for a chopstick factory. For the record, Japanese people don't in general celebrate Chopstick Appretiation Day.

Then in the evening I went to see some fireworks on a riverside in the northern part of Tokyo. Japanese people LOVE fireworks, and every weekend in summer multiple places run competing fireworks shows. I am not a huge fan of fireworks as I explain in the video, but it was fun.

Finally I went to Smokey Bears, a bar/restaurant I used to hang out in alot. The owner of the place, Haru is a good friend and a great guy. I only touched on it in this episode, but at some point Haru and his restaurant deserve an entire Vlog as I have a lot of stories to tell about our adventures together. But that is for another Vlog.

Have a Happy Summer!

Music:

Perfect Thyroid: "Blah Blah Blah"
Dave Brubeck: "Tokyo Traffic"
Quincy Jones: "Summer in the City"

  • Oh my goodness. Two hours worth of fireworks?! They are beautiful but I would die of bordom. Also, when you were having your bagel, I loved seeing the buildings in the shot. I am a sucker for many tall buildings in an area.

  • Still waiting on the vlog about Haru...

  • HUZZAH, today is the day I can finally set fire to my chopsticks to show them my respect. I've always thought " If only there was a day where i could just, you know, burn these chopsticks to show them my respect." Well now i know
