Stephen Gately Funeral Around 3,000 Fans Fill Street Outside

The funeral of Boyzone singer Stephen Gately has taken place at a church in Dublin.

The funeral of Boyzone singer Stephen Gately has taken place at a church in Dublin.

Among those who attended were his bandmates Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Mikey Graham and Shane Lynch.

At the service, Keating, Duffy and Graham paid tribute to the 33-year-old pop star and Keating sang In This Life.

About 3,000 people filled the streets around St Laurence O'Toole's church in the rough, crime-ridden area where Gately grew up.

Keating said: "I have lost my brother. Life will never be the same. He was a man, a friend, a son, a husband and a hero."

Graham said: "He brought colour to the band, we are black and white without him."

And there was applause after the band's eulogy.

Father Declan Blake also paid tribute to Gately, calling him a true gentleman who brought happiness to many, many people.

After the service, Keating, Duffy, Graham and Lynch helped carry the coffin out of the church. It was then taken in a cortege to a crematorium a couple of miles away.
