Who said that Dawn gave the Sophomores lousy material. What about COOL COOL BABY; OCEAN BLUE ; EVERYNIGHT ABOUT THIS TIME. Go find there CD and you will hear some great material. There big failure was lack of promotion. The label was more interested in the Latin material on SEECO and other latin labels. But was really amazing was that Bobby & The Orbits ended up on Seeco with Fleicia another central Mass. Group. The Sophomores sold very well here in Boston as did Bobby.

@PJDooWop Really doo wop is preferred by the Mafia! In the Sopranos several eppys they were listening to this kind of music, along with movies like Goodfellas, Bronx Tale, Mean Streets, etc. So calling it gangster music isnt far from the truth!

I've looked for this song for 40 years!! My dad was a DJ in the late '50s, kept a box of 45s he played at sock hops. Box lost over time. Remembered title and most of the lyrics, but not who sang it. Googled the lyrics many times -- got nothing. Googled Charades and doo-wop, just now, and here you are! Thanks for posting!

Glad you reached out. I think the clinking piano would make a good sample if it was chopped out and put back together. The rest might be hard to sample because although it's at about 120 bpm, the band is playing really fast. It's a great song never the less. I like the flipside of this one too, and I'll get that posted for you. The Sophomore did some other releases on a label called Dawn, but that label's management gave them shitty material to cut.

I've always liked this song. Clever lyrics, nice beat and good ensemble singing. I own what I believe is the 'original' Epic label '45, and was, frankly, disappointed that it didn't get more air play and reach a higher position on the hit charts.

Both Chord and Epic are originals... Both were pressed in '57. Chord was the first label, but shortly after Chord released it they sold it to Epic. By the time most people heard it on the radio, the Epic copies had already hit the shelves. Most likely Chord was forced to destroy their remaining stock as was commonly the case when the rights to a song were sold to another label.
