So if you can live with a little less power, converting the engine makes a lot of sense. As long as it can be adjusted far enough down in pressure that it doesn't knock, it's all good. Modern cars adjust this automatically.
The biggest thing you have to look out for, is wether or not the engine needs leaded/unleaded fuel. And even that can often be worked out bu replacing the valves, and the top piece that holds the valveseats.
Sure you can, it can be readjusted to run perfectly fine on 95 octane petrol.
Takes a bit of work, but it's doable.
You loose a little bit of power and fueleconomy, but the upside is that lower octane fuels are generally cheaper. Not to mention easily available.
Remember, the only thing a higher octane does, is having a higher pressure point before it self combusts. So with higher octane, you can run higher pressure, such as with turbochargers and the likes.
That might be, but here in Denmark, 98 Octane became so expensive that people didn't buy it anymore, so it been phased out on most petrol stations and replaced with 95 octane petrol or Bio-Diesel instead.
the privilege of driving one of these magnificent tourers is well worth the petrol. or just sitting in her and enjoying the smell of unashamed luxury!

Or just use a lead-additive.

Nowadays, 95 octane unleaded petrol costs on average 6½ USD a gallon in Denmark.
Which is better than when it was at 7 USD.
So don't worry, you guys still have cheap gas. :)
