Albertina Walker was born on August 29th, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois. She began singing on the youth choir at The West Point Missionary Baptist Church at age 4. As she became older she began to sing with various groups such as Pete Williams Singers, Wille Webb, and Robert Anderson & His Gospel Caravans. Her friend & mentor Mahalia Jackson always told tina " Girl you need to go sing by yourself" Albertina was approached from the proprietors of States Records Mr. Leonard Allen & Mr. Lew Simpkins to record solo on their label. Not wanting to record by herself she ask The singers from Robert Anderson's Group(Elyse Yancey, Ora Lee Hopkins, Nellie Grace Daniels) they agreed Which 'The Original Caravans' was formed. The recorded their first single "Think of His Goodness" in April 18th 1952. Since that time many future stars would later join the FAMOUS CARAVANS such as...Bessie Griffin, James Cleveland, Gloria Griffin, Imogene Green, Inez Andrews, Delores Washington, Dorothy Norwood, Shirley Ceasar, Loletta Holloway, Julia Mae Price..To name a FEW! Hey discovery of these soon to be Superstars earned her the title *THE STARMAKER* When the Caravans Disbanded in 1972 they would gather together occasionally to sing together for reunions & gatherings. In the Late 70's Albertina wanted to retire her good friend The Late Rev. James Cleveland convince her otherwise this led to the REUNION album in 1978 she was crowned 'The Queen Of Gospel'. In 1979 she again record with Rev. James Cleveland & John McNeil "Please Be Patient With Me" as a result went GOLD, Her career has spanned for more than SIX decades and recorded 60 albums. Albertina is noted for singing songs such as...I've Got a Feeling (Everything will be all right), Please Be Patient With Me, Tell The Angels, I can go to God in prayer, The Impossible Dream, Since I met Jesus, Show Some Sign, The Blood, Work On Me, When God dips is pen of Love in my Heart and I'm Still Here All which became HITS! Albertina won a Grammy award in 1995. Albertina Walker was a tireless worker founded and given support to many organizations & charities such as Gospel Music Workshop of America, United Negro College Fund, America Cancer Society to name a few. Albertina Walker was a force to be reckoning with in the Gospel Field, She never thought of herself and let others shine. She's been on the battlefield for the Lord & toiled for many years, Albertina Walker Depart from this life on Oct. 4th,2010 we will never forget her life or her legacy she has left here for us to cherish. A documentary of her life has been released last year (2010)
