Yes, I think you are correct. I e-mailed Gary Hobbs (another Kenton alumni drummer) about 'Bernie's Tune' and Gary indicated that it was Jerry McKenzie. Also, he doesn't look like any of the other drummers mentioned. Jerry could play!
Further add, Jerry McKenzie, here's a You Tube link to a 1998 Kenton alumni gig in London with Jerry McKenzie on drums. Looks like the same guy 30 plus years later to me.Stan Kenton Egham Convention Malaguena
This is not Mel Lewis. I believe it's Jerry McKenzie, obviously a first class player. Mel Lewis by 1965 had moved from LA to New York, leaving behind the drum chair with Gerald Wilson's awesome big band to form his own with Thad Jones. As any drummer or ex-drummer worth his chops knows, Thad was not unfamiliar with exceptional drummers, as his brother was Elvin Jones.
The drummer (same fellow also on the Christy 'opener') is neither Mel Lewis nor either of the two MacKenzies, and only one of those latter two could hold that 288 anyway:-))
That looked like Shelley Mann in the drums to me!

I think you're right. I note also that he had "lost" the mellophoniums by this time. Mixed feelings about that here.
